It was in 2007 that I came first in contact with the UN Global Compact, as a member of Junior Chamber International (JCI) during a workshop that the Global Compact held at the JCI World Congress in Antalya.
During that workshop, the relevance and value of the local networks for the Global Compact participants was highlighted. A map was shown, with more than 130 countries filled as "active networks". In the middle of the map, there was a tiny blank spot. It appeared that Belgium was one of the last European countries without an active Global Compact local network.
I was compelled to do something about that.
As an active member of JCI and (at that time) Director for internationalism at the board of JCI Vlaanderen, I took the lead in the initiative to make sure that a Belgian network for the Global Compact would be realized. After all, the Junior Chamber International does have a global partnership with the UN Global Compact to help and support the Global Compact where support is needed.
This started with a first gathering of Global Compact participants who have operations in Belgium at a round table meeting mid 2008, kindly hosted by KBC. We had about 35 participants at that occassion. Efforts continued with the formation of the GCNB Task Force and came to a culmination late 2009. On 15 october 2009, we organized our first Outreach Event and official launch of the Global Compact Network Belgium (GCNB), hosted by the Belgian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, under the auspicious of Minister Yves Leterme.
In the meantime, my company, ubeon | business experts had already become a participant back in 2008. The Global Compact provided our business with a framework and a reference point to integrate sustainable principles in our own organization. This is still an ongoing effort and we are now preparing our first Communication on Progress (CoP).
On the 25th of February, eighteen Belgian Participants of the Global Compact chartered the Global Compact Network Belgium as a non-for-profit organization and elected a Steering Committee, to build further upon the work of the GCNB Task Force.
The work continues...
As the newly elected Vice Chairman of the GCNB, I continue my mission to connect people and organizations with a vision towards collaboration, exchange and learning in order for businesses and business leaders to build a better business.
The Global Compact Network Belgium actively seeks collaboration with other organizations that work in the field in order to help businesses evolve towards better integration of the principles of Corporate Responsibility. We invite all Belgian companies, civil societies and governmental bodies to engage with the Global Compact and our local network.
Through the Belgian network we intend to bring value to the Belgian Global Compact participants through workshops, thematic workgroups, peer reviews, knowledge sharing and business networking.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to help form the Global Compact Network Belgium, especially the members of the GCNB Task Force!
In a few days I'll talk about the 3P+ Navigator at EBBF. Here's a quick introduction and a link:
Practical Approach to CSR - Coach your team towards CSR using the 3P+ Navigator – a team-coaching instrument that makes leaders and team members interact and explore what initiatives they can take to integrate Corporate Social Responsibility principles in their projects and organizations.
In these roles you meet specific challenges, related to your profession:
How do you acquire good projects? How do you work with / on corporate cultures?
How can you lead your client to the right decissions?
As an answer, the ubeon | academy offers three programs:
In deze rollen komt u voor specifieke uitdagingen, eigen aan uw vak: Hoe werft u klanten? Hoe werkt u met / aan de bedrijfscultuur? Hoe zorgt u voor de juiste keuzes en formuleert u de scherpste inzichten?
Als antwoord hierop biedt ubeon | academy drie programma's:
Kan de Apple iPad het allomtegenwoordige notitieblok vervangen? Als ondernemer zoek ik steeds naar efficiënties in mijn organisatie. Paperless Office (of Near Paperless Office) is zo'n efficiëntie.
Negatief
Positief
Geen multitasking
Prima leesbaarheid
Geen camera
Groot scherm (A4 formaat)
Geen locatie-informatie (GPS?)
IntuitiveMultitouch input
Gebogen achterzijde (stabiliteit?)
Audio-input
Geen Flash
Adapters i.p.v. standaard connectors
As such, one system may consist of several subsystems and be itself a subsystem for a larger system. The human body is a system, made up from limbs and organs, a nervous system, a cardiovascular system etc. When a systems thinker is coaching, he or she will chunk up and down the coachee’s systems.
Chunking down means considering the coachee’s model of the world, value & belief systems, meta programs, representational systems, sub modalities etc.
Chunking up means considering the larger systems or ecologies that encompass the coachee: family, community, society, etc.
When you think in systems, you find the forces that drive you towards certain outcomes. When you learn to move beyond mere logical and analytical thinking, systems thinking forms the launch pad for successful strategic planning, goal setting, etc.
Since I receive a lot of question on what systems are, and how they work here's a quick introduction in a few blog posts.
Understanding systems and systemic relationships enables us to find (and influence) the driving forces for certain behaviour and phenomenon.
A system is a set of interdependent and mutually influencing parts. A systems thinker typically does not only consider what the different parts are of a problem; he or she will look at how these parts influence one another. The systems thinker is always looking for the causal relationships.
Fig. Two parts of a system that influence each other
A systems thinker will ask for the parts that exert influence on a particular situation, the relationships between these parts and the nature of these relationships.
When you think in systems, you find the forces that drive you towards certain outcomes. When you learn to move beyond mere logical and analytical thinking, systems thinking forms the launch pad for successful strategic planning, goal setting, etc.
Henry Markram is building a brain in a supercomputer. During his quest, he discoverd some interesting aspects of the human brain. Even though my neurological makeup may be different than yours, the fabric of the synapsis is similar and therefore we can exchange information about reality (or better: our realities).
Apple's marketing doing a marvelous job at turning the rumoureed new Apple tablet into a hype on the web. I'll be ones on the lookout for the Apple iPad (or iSlate) presentation on January 27th.
But every time I watch Steve Jobs present, I'm not only interested in what he's bringing. I also learn a lot from how Steve conducts his presentations.

Mirror-neurons is a set of neurons that enable us to learn, to adapt, to empathize... It's also the basis for connected consiousness. It is also the basis of modelling in NLP and helps us in understanding goals and intentions. Neuroscientist Vilayanur Ramachandran explains how mirror-neurons work in these two TED video's:
In recent years issues concerning sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have surfaced and have become major topics for politics and business. The failing of the Copenhagen summit is a clear indicator that there exists awareness, but there is still lack of will and no sense of responsibility on the part of world leaders today.
We, people who are working in the field of people development, have the tools and the techniques to help build awareness and motivation to take action, working directly with people in business, NGO's, government and education.
To facilitate this, we have developed a team-coaching process, combining the strengths of NLP and systemic constellations. To make sure that you can use this toolkit easily and right away, we have made the process very accessible, easy to use and free!
Introducing the 3P+ Navigator
The 3P+ Navigator is a coaching-instrument that makes leaders and team members interact and explore what initiatives they can take to integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles in their teams, projects and organizations.
Corporate Social Responsibility in action
Using the 3P+ Navigator, team leaders and their co-workers are able to formulate initiatives that make sense for their team, project or organization, in about 90 minutes.
You can use it with your clients, your organization, your team
The 3P+ Navigator has been specifically designed to be used by coaches. It helps you to empower entrepreneurs, managers and team leaders to take the initiative. CSR then no longer remains a beautiful thought, but inspires people to take action and generate sustainable outcomes.
Free download
The 3P+ Navigator toolkit consists of 5 pads (Identity, People, Planet, Profet and Observer) and a manual for the facilitator. You can download the toolkit for free or order your 3P+ Navigator toolkit for only 125,- euro. In English and Dutch.
We know that this process will grow and evolve as more people use it. That's why the 3P+ is open! There is a forum on the 3P+ Navigator website where you can share your ideas, improvements and experiences with others.

I've been tracking my e-mail behaviour over the course of one year. In 2009, I've received 38701 e-mails, of which:
8340 were from people I knew
7010 were from people I didn't knew (yet)
12208 were newsletters (to which I subscribed, but rarely read)
11143 were spam messages
That gives me an average of 109 e-mails per day that call for my attention. Luckily, only 43 of those e-mails really require my attention. However, If I would spend an average of 3 minutes per e-mail (reading and giving a quick answer), I would spend more than 2 hours per day dealing with my e-mail.
Maybe that's why I (only) sent 4406 e-mails (an average of 12 e-mails per day).

Some interesting ideas I gathered during the conference "The Agile Organization" (De wendbare organisatie), organized by Kluwer Opleidingen on Dec. 2nd.
Management by yearly budgeting is too slow.
Enterprises are often like big ships. Agile businesses are more like a fleet of small ships.
An Agile business requires an agile culture.
A process should be managed by the people who are responsibe for the process.
Functional managers should be more like coaches.
Organisations serve processes.
A captain who does not know where the ship is heading is a problem for the whole ship. A ship who's crew does not know where the ship is heading is a problem for the captain AND the whole ship.
Decisions based on symptoms instead of causes are generally bad decisions.
Management today is like playing a videogame; by trial and error.
The only constant is change.
A plan means a future.
Every year is a revolution.
Being agile is a cornerstone for strategic thinking for every business today.
Excellence is not an act, it is a habit. (Aristoteles)

Flow is often managed into destruction.

The leader in an agile organisation does nothing else than making connections between people. Making sure that they talk to each-other.
Dont put people in meetings. Put them in dialog.

An answer comes from the past.
A question takes us to the future.
Google loves LinkedIn! Maybe you've noticed that LinkedIn profiles show up high in Google results when you type in someone's name? Why LinkedIn and not any other social / professional networking site?
Because LinkedIn offers us high-quality linking possibilities, which can make Google believe that your profile page is highly relevant. To make full use of this potential, make sure to:
Invite your network to link with you using LinkedIn. You can easily upload a contact list to the LinkedIn site or sync contacts with your Google account for instance.
Write recommendations for others regularely. Make sure that you use relevant words for your own profile. These words will appear on the profile of the person you're writing a recommendation for! And it will backlink to your profile. Sweet.
Place links to your website(s) on your profile page! When your LinkedIn page receives a high Google PageRank score, it will affect the score of your website(s) in a positive way!

Alpha Wave must be one of the most popular underground techno-trance tracks we ever created.
Unfortunately when the original edit of Alpha Wave went to the press, something got mixed up on the label, which just mentioned "Wave". In any case, this track became hugely successful and was regularly played in Dance Cafés such as the Paddock in Bruges. It appeared on several compilations.

I stumbled upon this very comprehensive introduction in Systems Thinking and thought I'd share this with you. In X chapters, Ron Davidson brings us the basics of this new way of thinking, that is currently revolutionizing business. Make sure you click through all the chapters (see below).
This book is a must read for everyone who is involved in the decision making processes of their business or community. The insights Mr. Surowiecki unveils are especially relevant when you want to understand what's going on in today's times of crisis.
All leaders should understand the principles that drive decision making, especially when this happens in groups. In essence; groups are typically smarter than individuals when following criteria are met:
Diversity of opinion; each person should have private information (even if that information is incorrect)
Independence; people opnions aren't determined by the opinions of others;
Decentralization; people are able to specialize and draw on local knowledge;
Aggregation; a neutral mechanisms exists that turns private judgment into collective decision.
I have to admit that this is typically not the way I've seen groups form decisions. We usually think of debate and argumentation as the appropriate means to come to a decision. This typically does not make the group smarter. Independent forming of an opinion is thus influenced. To make matters worse, I've seen that very often individual exploration of data is discouraged or even counteracted. Also, the opnion of people who are highly positioned in a hierarchy is often sought and usually has a lot of weight on the decision making processes of the others.
An effective leader who wants to leverage the full potential of its entourage should therefore elicit independent exploration and make sure that the group has the tools for the aggregation and forming of smart decisions.
uCoach stands for personal excellence through coaching leadership, coaching selling and coaching communication. The uCoach learning program is built around regular group sessions, in which participants are introduced to the basic coaching principles and can practice coaching each other. Doing so, participants learn to develop helpful mindsets for personal and professional development, leadership, influence and relations.
When uCoach was rolled out in Junior Chamber International (JCI), it quickly attracted the interest of people who wanted to develop coaching abilities for personal and professional goals. The uCoach program notably stood out for its pragmatic approach and the ease with which people could acquire practical skills.
During it's ten month run in JCI, uCoach became a big hit within JCI and has been granted two awards:
Growth and Development Award from JCI Gent
Best Individual Development & Leadership Program Award from JCI Belgium
A big thank you for all your support! To my co-trainer Katja, to all the participants and to the people of JCI Gent who submitted this program to the award committees.
I couldn't sleep so I thought I'd upload this. It's been on my mind for a while.

The Global Compact Network Belgium was launched last week, on 15 October 2009 (read the press release). Its purpose is to serve as a point for communication and collaboration, peer review and training. The Belgian network is currently being supported by key participants, local partners of the UN Global Compact and the Belgian government.
The UN Global Compact is a leadership platform, endorsed by business leaders and their CEO's, offering a unique strategic platform for participants to advance their commitments to sustainability and corporate citizenship.
As the Chairman of the Task Force that took the initiative to create the Belgian Network for the UN Global Compact, I presented a short speech:
You cannot create a network in a single day. Creating a network takes a lot of time, effort and commitment from a lot of people. And this is certainly true when the network involves the leaders of business and society.
Therefore I feel privileged to stand here before you, as we witness the first steps in the creation of the Belgian Network for the UN Global Compact.
All of us being here today is a clear example of how our world is interconnected. We are all interconnected. And therefore, we are all responsible. Responsible for our ecology. Responsible for the future we build for our families. And as leaders, we are responsible for the systems we create.
The Global Compact is a worldwide system that connects the leaders of business and society, and aims for a better future. Today, the Global Compact networks span the entire globe and connect more than 7000 organizations.
I first learned about the Global Compact during a seminar at the Junior Chamber World Conference, a few years ago. There I saw a colorful map of all the Global Compact networks in the world. And on that map, in the centre of Europe, I saw a white spot. That spot was Belgium.
Today we witness the creation of the Belgian Network for the Global Compact. Today we reach out to other leaders of business and society, to join the Global Compact. And today we provide you with a calendar of our activities.
In November, we will be present at the Annual Diamond Conference in Antwerp, to highlight the importance of the UN Global Compact.
In December the Belgian Participants of the Global Compact will be able to elect a formal Steering Committee for the network.
Early next year, we plan a variety of activities including workshops and seminars. And later next year, we plan to organize a Conference on the Global Compact in Europe in light of the Belgian presidency of the EU.
We also seek active collaboration with existing CSR networks and initiatives, and already have built good relations with Kauri and Business & Society.
As you can see, there’s a lot to come. And we invite you all to become part of our network. Join the Global Compact. Join us, and take the lead, towards a more responsible and more sustainable future.
The event that is mentioned to be held november 2009 will be held instead in the spring of 2010.
The event mentioned to be held in september 2010 is currently being considered as an opportunity, for which we seed advisement and collaboration of all parties involved.
E-mailing has become more than just exchanging information. You often e-mail people you've never seen in real life. Whenever you're communicating with another person via e-mail, it's very important to take great care of your language, phrasing and message formatting. How can you build a good relationship with a person you've never met?
This ninety-minute workshop will let you discover how you can build relations using the limitations and features of e-mail. So that you can make sure that you will be able to forge 'real' relationships in the virtual world.

elke kamer 'te vullen' met jouw aanwezigheid;
een degelijke 'eerste indruk' te maken bij elke nieuwe ontmoeting;
mensen aan te sporen om met jou een interactie te willen;
jezelf te positioneren als iemand met hoge status en natuurlijk charisma;
van je volgende verkoopsmeeting, solicitatie of date een leuke ervaring te maken;
I was simply struck when I first saw this video. I've talked about it to everyone ever since. When I was a kid, I remember the stories about people venturing to the North Pole wearing polar suits and still not being able to make it. This guy is swimming in the icy waters in his speedo!
Last week I attended an inspiring presentation organized by the Flemish Center for Quality Management (VCK) on the emerging paradigms for management. New economic thinking shifts the purpose of business from growth to sustainability, competition to collaboration, from market to community and from profit to well-being.
I believe this is true. Future business leaders are the people who innovate and create new economic reality by working together, act as a community towards sustainable systems and the well-being of all stakeholders.

Talking about a responsible business attitude... thank you Philippe for pointing me to this short sketch on Vendor-Client relationship in the Real World!
Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 mins a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
4 mins later the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.
6 minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
10 mins: a 3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.
45 minutes; the musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.
He collected $32.
1 hour; he finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments .... how many other things are we missing?
I've received this story via e-mail in january of this year. Thanks Don for pointing me to the source (link below).
When I was in Santa Cruz this summer I was thinking of a way to deepen NLP skills, together with others. After talking with a few others, we got the idea of organizing 'NLP Workouts', much like you would do a physical workout. The NLP workout however also trains our brains! :-) The idea is that we could organize such workout sessions all over the place, in easily accessible places with a minimum of costs.
To get this going right away, I've reserved a meeting space in Brussels, where we can get together to 'play with NLP'.
NLP Workout : Sleight of Mouth
15 september, 19h00, The Hub Brussels, Rue Prince Royal 27, Brussels
The NLP Workouts are open workshops for people who have had training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and who would like to deepen their NLP skills together with other NLP Practitioners and NLP Master Practitioners. In this NLP workout, we'll practice conversational belief change with Sleight of Mouth.
The NLP Workouts are focused on practice and integration. You need to have at least NLP Practitioner level in order to participate.

I started my carreer as a graphic designer and often had to manipulate images. Photoshopping not only happens to create 'perfect bodies'. It's also being done to create perfect skies over touristic resorts, perfect rooms in hotels, perfect cars etc.
Thanks Gilbert and Richard for pointing me to this marvelous presentation. Watch how Jill represents sensory systems (Representational Systems in NLP).
