A new kind of leadership

Achieving a sustainable future together will require a new kind of leadership. The traditional definition will not be enough. We can no longer wait for "the leaders" to come forward and solve our problems. As part of the system, we create our own reality every day, individually and collectively. We need to take responsibility or "self-leadership", for our contribution to the current situation and recognise our capacity to play a role in fashioning a different reality.

Those who are in traditional leadership positions need to foster the right conditions for self-leadership and self-organisation to emerge. We will not solve the complex problems caused by our unsustainable behaviour by dictate. And, while regulation, policies and strategies will continue to be important, experience has shown that they are not enough. We need to create space for the will and wisdom of all participants in the system to catalyse further progress.
